The 34-year-old thinks that her inclusion as one of six pioneering women in a men’s global championship, together with fellow referees Yoshimi Yamashita and Stephanie Frappart, and three assistant referees, would open up opportunities for additional women.

Who Is Salima Mukansanga?
Salima Mukansanga is a well-known international referee from Rwanda. She has been in the news because she was chosen for officiating the men’s World Cup.
She was born in 1988 in Rwanda.
After completing secondary school, Salima Mukansanga approached the Rwanda Football Federation about enrolling in a refereeing course, but this was rejected on the grounds that she was once again too young. After studying the rules of football on her own time, she was later permitted to enroll in one of their courses.
She did her graduation in Nursing and Midwifery. She is currently 34 years old. There is no information of her family but she is said to be unmarried.
Her Career
Initially active in basketball, Salima Mukansanga switched to football after learning she was too young to play for the national under-17 basketball team.
At the beginning of her career, she officiated women’s national second-division games as well as men’s local amateur football games in Rwanda. Since 2012, Salima Mukansanga has been classified as an international referee by FIFA. At the 2019 FIFA Women’s World Cup in France, she served as a representative.
She was the first female official to officiate an African Cup of Nations match in 2022. At the Olympics, FIFA Women’s World Cup, Africa Women’s Cup of Nations, and CAF Women’s Champions League, she has served as a referee.
She was one of the three female referees chosen to work the Qatar-hosted FIFA World Cup in 2022. She was the first African woman to officiate at the premier men’s football competition. She is paid 5,000 euros per match in fees at the FIFA World Cup 2022 with her net worth at $500,000.
