In a closed-door meeting held during the 76th regional committee meeting of SEAR in New Delhi, the ten SEAR member states nominated Wazed to be the next regional director, according to an announcement made by the WHO on Wednesday.
The WHO added that at its 154th session, which is set to take place in Geneva, Switzerland, in January 2024, the Executive Board of the organization would be presented with Saima Wazed’s nomination.
But the votes, which were cast by all ten of the member nations, came after a contentious campaign. Throughout the campaign, several medical specialists contended that the more competent candidate was Wazed’s opponent, Nepali veteran Shambhu Prasad Acharya, the WHO official.
