The Commissioner’s Trophy, awarded annually by the MLB commissioner to the World Series champion, has a history dating back to 1967. However, it wasn’t until 1985 that it received its current name.

While the Stanley Cup bears the name of Lord Stanley of Preston, the Lombardi Trophy honors legendary coach Vince Lombardi, and the NBA champion gets the Larry O’Brien Trophy named after a former commissioner, the Commissioner’s Trophy is distinguished by its lack of a personal namesake.

The original design, dating back to 1967, was created by Balfour Jewelers, a company based in Attleboro, Massachusetts. This early version took inspiration from the iconic Wrigley Field, featuring a design with flags, though with fewer of them representing the fewer MLB teams at the time.

The modern Commissioner’s Trophy, as we know it today, was unveiled in 2000. It stands at 24 inches in height, excluding the base, with a diameter of 11 inches.

The trophy is not lightweight as it boasts an approximate weight of 30 pounds. Each year, a new trophy is crafted by Tiffany and Co., the renowned jewelry company.

While the exact worth remains undisclosed, WSB-TV Atlanta reported in 2021 that the trophy costs anywhere from $20,000 to $30,000 to make.

To put this in perspective, the original Commissioner’s Trophy from 1967, when it was first awarded, was reported to cost $2,500. Adjusted for inflation, that would amount to over $20,000 in today’s market.

The Commissioner’s Trophy is predominantly crafted from sterling silver, akin to the material used for the NFL’s Lombardi Trophy. However, it isn’t all silver; there are hints of gold adorning the piece as well. The flags on the trophy are meticulously plated in gold.

The Commissioner’s Trophy is not only about flags, it also features a silver baseball marked with latitude and longitude lines, symbolizing the globe.

One might wonder whether the Commissioner’s Trophy changes every year. The answer is yes. A new trophy is designed and crafted each year, adding an element of novelty and customization to the tradition.
