Beatrice is the current world record holder in the 10,000 metres, which she set at the 2024 Prefontaine Classic on May 25.

Beatrice Chebet breaks 10,000m event record

Kenyan long-distance runner Beatrice Chebet recently registered a run time of 28:54.14, breaking the previous record of 29:01.03 that Tokyo Olympics bronze medalist Letsenebet Gedey set in 2020. Following her performance, she is now the first woman ever to break the 29-minutebarrier in the Womenโ€™s 10,000-event. Notably, the win also marked the first time that she ran in the discipline outside Kenya. Aside from setting a new record, Chebet also earned a berth for the upcoming Paris Olympics 2024.

During the race, Chebet came to a close contest with the two-time World Championships gold medalist, Gudaf Tsegay. Despite the challenge, the Kenyan runner managed to accelerate superbly in the last lap. Following the race, she stated in the post-match interview:

The last lap just motivated me, especially when Gudaf dropped.Then I realized, โ€˜Oh, I am the best, so I can go.โ€

Beatrice Chebet bio and family

Beatrice Chebet is a Kenyan long-distance runner who was born on March 5, 2000, in Kenya, to parents, Francis Kirui and Lilian Kirui. She also has a younger sister named Sandra Chebet, who has also participated across various track and field competitions, like the World U20 Championships.

She is single and unmarried.

Age and height

Beatrice Chebet is currently just 24 years old and stands at a height of 167 cm (5โ€™05โ€).

Education

Chebet attended Saramerk Secondary High Schoolin Londiani during her childhood and passed out in 201. Following her graduation, she joined the Lemotit Athletics Club to follow her dreams of becoming a track and field athlete.

Beatrice Chebet career

Chebet first gained prominence back in June 2018, after she won the Kenyan Under-20s 5000 meters, aged 18. Just one month later at Tampere 2018, Chebet won the 5000 m title at the World U20 Championships in Athletics, becoming the first Kenyan woman and the first non-Ethiopian since 2006 to win it. The following year, in 2019, Chebet won the gold medal at the World Cross Country Championships alongside Ethiopian duo Alemitu Tariku and Tsigie Gebreselama.

She also won the Kenyan U20 National Cross-Country Championships that same year. Beatrice Chebet also won the silver medal for the 5000 m race in July 2022 at the World Championships in Eugene, Oregon. She came in behind Gudaf Tsegay with a time of 14:46.75. Notably, she is a three-time cross-country and one-time African Championships gold medallist.
