Rui Costa is a Portuguese former professional footballer who full name is Rui Manuel Cesar Costa. Costa was born on March 29, 1972 in Amadora, Portugal. He is widely regarded as one of the greatest players of his generation.

Costa primarily played as an attacking midfielder and was mostly known for having excellent ball technique and playmaking ability. He was undoubtedly one of the greatest midfielders of his generation and had an eye for the goal from midfield. Besides an attacking-midfield role, he could also play as a deep-lying playmaker, a second striker, or as a winger.

However, the club had to sell him due to financial problems when Fiorentina offered a 1.2 million escudos offer. While playing at Fiorentina, Costa helped the team lift the Coppa Italia twice besides winning a Supercoppa Italiana.

Costa’s attracted a lot of other European clubs on joining Fiorentina and was eventually sold to AC Milan in 2001. In fact, at a price of €41.32m, Costa was Milan’s most expensive transfer of all-time. He is still currently the second most expensive transfer.

He played for the Rossoneri for five seasons, helping them lift multiple titles, including a Serie A title, Coppa Italia, Supercoppa Italiana, UEFA Champions League, and UEFA Super Cup.

Later in 2006, Costa returned to Benfica, where he played for two seasons before announcing his retirement prior to start of the 2007-08 Primeira Liga. Costa played his final professional club match against Vitória de Setúbal at the Estadio da Luz on 11 May 2008.
