NFL appoints Ronald Torbert as Super Bowl LIX referee
The NFL has appointed veteran official Ronald Torbert as the referee for Super Bowl LIX. Alongside Torbert, the officiating crew for the NFL final consists of umpire Mike Morton, down judge Max Causey, line judge Mark Stewart, field judge Mearl Robinson, side judge Boris Cheek, back judge Jonah Monroe, and replay official Kevin Brown.
Notably, the upcoming match will serve as Torbert’s second Super Bowl assignment after serving as the referee at Super Bowl LVI. His last match was serving as the referee during the Washington Commanders win over the Detroit Lions on Saturday in the NFC divisional round.

Ronald Torbert is an American professional football official who was born in 1964, and he is currently 61 years old. He currently serves as an official in the National Football League (NFL) since the 2010 season. While in his uniform, he wears the number 62. Aside from his work as an NFL official, Torbert also works as an attorney.
Ron Torbert has been married to Melanie Torbert for more than thirty years and the couple has two children, Harold and Veronica, and a grandson, Elliott.
In his spare time, Ron coached AAU basketball and volleyball and now lives in Maryland with his wife, Melanie.
Education
Ronald Torbert obtained his early education from South High School in Youngstown, Ohio. He then attended Michigan State University before attending Harvard Law School, where he earned a Juris doctor.
Career
Ronald Torbert started out his NFL officiating career back in 2010 as a side judge before eventually becoming a referee during the 2014 NFL season. The move came after Scott Green and Ron Winter announced that they were retiring. Torbert is just one of eight African-American referees to have served in NFL history.
Torbert is notably a veteran NFL referee and previously served as the alternate referee for Super Bowl LIII. He also served as the referee for Super Bowl LVI in 2022. Just recently, on January 21, 2025, the NFL named him as the referee for Super Bowl LIX.
