The identities of the four victims, two of whom were students and the other two were teachers in the mass shooting at Apalachee High School on Wednesday morning have been verified by the Georgia Bureau of Investigation. Richard Aspinwall, the defensive coordinator for the football team, was one of the professors who lost their lives. Aspinwall was a math teacher at the high school as well.

The bloodiest incident of school violence in Georgia history occurred on Wednesday when a gunman opened fire at Apalachee High School in Winder, Georgia, killing two teachers and two pupils. Nine more people were injured, at least.

39 year old math teacher Aspinwall who was married and had two girls was also the school’s American football defensive coordinator and nearby Mountain View High School identified Aspinwall as its former teacher and coach, saying its “thoughts and prayers” were with his family.


Brandon Gill, the football coach of nearby Buford High School, wrote on social media that Aspinwall was a “helluva human being” who “would do anything for anyone. He was an “amazing husband, father, teacher and coach.”

Mason Schermerhorn and Christian Angulo, two 14-year-old boys, were named by the police as the dead students. Officials said that Christina Irimie and Richard Aspinwall were the educators that died.

At a press conference, law enforcement representatives stated that they anticipated the hospitalized victims to fully recover.

Before the 2023 season, Richard Aspinwall, 39, was employed as Apalachee’s defensive coordinator and taught algebra, according to the school directory. Aspinwall also taught at Lawrenceville’s Mountain View High School and Dunwoody High School.

About 18,000 people live in Winder, which is about 50 miles northeast of downtown Atlanta. The incident has alarmed the locals there.

During the incident, David Phenix, the school’s golf coach and a math special education teacher, sustained injuries. His daughter, Katie Phenix, said in a Facebook post on Wednesday that her father had been shot in the foot and hip, breaking his hip bone.

โ€œHe arrived to the hospital alert and awake,โ€ she wrote in the post, adding that he had surgery earlier that day.

Who shot Richard Aspinwall?

Gray is 14 years old, and many who know him describe him as a calm child. Lyela Sayarath, a fellow student who was seated next to Gray prior to the incident, stated: “He never really talked.”

Most of the time, he wasn’t there. He would either simply skip class or he wouldn’t show up for school. Even when he did speak, it was only brief remarks or one-word responses, as per Lyela.
