In addition to being the great uncle of WWE superstar Dominik Mysterio, the wrestling icon, whose true name is Miguel Angel Lopez Dias, was a star of several Mexican promotions, notably the World Wrestling Association. Rey Misterio Sr.made his professional wrestling debut in January 1976 and worked for organizations such as the World Wrestling Association, Tijuana Wrestling, and Pro Wrestling Revolution.

The wrestling world has been thrown into mourning as legendary luchador Rey Misterio Sr., born Miguel Ángel López Días, passed away at the age of 66 but a cause of death wasn’t revealed by his son who broke the news.
Mexican boxer turned wrestler Rey Misterio Sr. was born on January 8, 1958. He was 5ft 9in tall. El Hijo de Rey Misterio is the stage name of Misterio’s son Miguel Aarón López Hernández, who is also a wrestler. Misterio Sr was the uncle of wrestlers Rey Mysterio and Metalika.
Rey Mysterio, the son of Rey Jr married Angie Gutiérrez. Rey Misterio Sr was also the great uncle of Dominik Mysterio.
It is not known if Misterio Sr was married and had a wife.

On December 20, 2024, Rey Misterio passed away at the age of 66. Only a few weeks have passed since the untimely death of Roberto Gutierrez, the father of Rey Mysterio Jr. and the grandpa of Dominik, who died on November 17 at the age of 76.

Rey Misterio Sr. initially trained to be a boxer, but as his physique became larger, he suffered numerous injuries and lost some of his hitting power. Misterio was informed about wrestling by his trainers when they informed him that he was no longer able to punch with force.

Soon after, his brother started taking him to lucha libre and wrestling training. Misterio ultimately made his wrestling debut on a program dubbed “Day of the Kings,” or Día de los Reyes, on January 6, 1976.
Rey Misterio Sr. joined Konnan to compete in the “Pat O’Connor Memorial International Cup” on behalf of Mexico at World Championship Wrestling’s Starrcade 1990 pay-per-view event.
Together with Super Astro and Negro Casas, Misterio founded a gym in 1987. Future global superstars Konnan, Psicosis, Halloween, Damián 666, and his nephew Rey Mysterio were among his first class wrestlers. The wrestlers Cassandro, Hayabusa, Extassis, Tigre Uno, Fobia, Misterioso, Demus 3:16, Ruby Gardenia, The Warlord, and Venum Black are also known to have been trained by Misterio.
Throughout his career, Misterio Sr. wrestled for promotions like Tijuana Wrestling, World Wrestling Association (WWA), Pro Wrestling Revolution, and Lucha Libre AAA Worldwide and he represented Mexico at World Championship Wrestling’s Starrcade in the “Pat O’Connor Memorial International Cup”.
The wrestler held numerous titles, including the Revolution Tag Team Championship, which he won with his son, the IWC World Middleweight Championship, and the WWA World Junior Light Heavyweight Championship.
Although he retired in 2009, Misterio Sr. stepped into the ring one last time in 2023 after making his debut in 1976 and in 2006, Misterio Sr. was inducted into the Tijuana Sports Hall of Fame.
While Misterio Sr.’s net worth isn’t known, his nephew Rey Mysterio has a net worth of $10 million.
