Profession and career
Following his graduation, Ram Agarwal took out a loan and opened a small photocopy shop to support his family. However, he was not content and just one year later, he launched a garment store in Kolkata’s Lal Bazaar. He ran the store for 15 years, learning about customer behavior and the retail industry. By 2001, he moved to Delhi and opened Vishal Retail, which later became Vishal Mega Mart.
The brand managed to quickly gain traction and seemingly became one of India’s most recognized hypermarket chains. Despite the initial success, Vishal Retail suffered a major loss of ₹750 crores in 2008 during the stock market crash. However, instead of selling off the company, Ram launched V2 Retail and started from scratch. Ram turned the company into a thriving business with nearly 200 stores across India.

Ram Agarwal often credits a large part of his success to his family. He is married to his wife Uma Agarwal, who is the full-time director of V2 Retail. They have a son named Akash Agarwal, who also serves as a director and plays an active role in the company. Meanwhile, their daughter, Shreya Agarwal, is currently a student at USC Marshall School of Business in the U.S.
