At the R Premadasa Stadium in Colombo on Sunday, September 17, India defeated Sri Lanka to win the Asia Cup for the eighth time. Meanwhile, alongside the team, another man was able to lift the trophy, and there has been a sense of mystery about it. Let us have a look at Raghu Raghavendra.
During the India and Bangladesh match, a photo of a man went viral with many praising his efforts and the photo was none other than India’s sidearm thrower Raghu Raghavendraa who ran around the ground with a brush in his hand to clean the shoes of Indian layers.
Who is Raghu Raghavendra?
Raghu Raghavendra is an Indian throwdown specialist and is a crucial support for the Indian Cricket Team. His main responsibility, assisted by a slinger, is to offer throwdowns to the Indian batters. From a small Karnataka village, he left his schooling and his home to pursue his cricket dreams in Mumbai. He used to be a professional cricket player, however, he had to give up his dreams following a wrist injury.
The head coach usually receives most of the credit for Team India’s accomplishments, but a few other players on the “sidelines” are just as important to the group. Raghavendra decided to go to the National Cricket Academy in Bengaluru, where he would practise and recuperate by sparring with Indian players. He joined the squad for the first time in India’s 2011–12 and returned as a member of supporting staff in 2014.
Raghu’s salary was earlier only INR 6 lakhs per annum which the BCCI had in 2018 more than tripled to 20 lakhs but his net worth isn’t known.
His dream to join the Indian team was fulfilled when he was inducted into the team as a ‘throwdown expert’ at the recommendation of cricket legends Sachin Tendulkar and Dravid, who had faced his quick throwdowns at the National Cricket Academy (NCA), in Bangalore.
