After 4 years of break, the United Left Panel maintained its dominance over the Jawaharlal Nehru Student Union (JNUSU) amid the echo of “lal salaam” shouts resonating through the air, winning all four seats in the much-anticipated election results released late on Sunday.

All India Students Association (AISA) representative Dhananjay won the presidency, and Mohammed Sajid and Avijit Ghosh won the positions of Joint Secretary and Vice President, respectively. Notably, Priyanshi Arya of the Left coalition-backed Birsa Ambedkar Phule Students Association (BAPSA) won the General Secretary election.

She defeated Arjun Anand of the ABVP by 926 votes to become the general secretary. Anand garnered 1961 votes, while Arya garnered 2,887.

Shortly before polls opened, the election committee annulled Swati Singh’s candidacy, which the United Left had previously put out for the position of general secretary. The Left coalition then came together to support Arya and urged students to vote for her.

Who is Priyanshi Arya?

Priyanshi is an Indian student activist and leader. She has been in the news because she recently won the post of general secretary in the Jawaharlal Nehru Student Union (JNUSU) elections. She is a Dalit Hindu.

She did her schooling at Niramala Convent Senior Secondary School. Later, she graduated from Indraprastha College for Women in Philosophy. She subsequently completed a master’s program in philosophy at Jawaharlal Nehru University. She is presently enrolled in Jawaharlal Nehru University’s PhD program in philosophy.

Her career

In May 2020, Priyanshi Arya began her career as an intern at the Youth Empowerment Foundation in Delhi, where she worked as a fundraiser. Her three-year membership in the Oghma—English Editorial Society, which ran from August 2018 to July 2021, was evidence of her dedication.

From September 2019 until July 2021, Arya assumed a leadership position and held the position of Vice President for the Department of Philosophy at IPCW. She developed her media expertise as a Media Fellow at The Blue Club from October to November 2022, helping with writing, editing, and publishing projects.

Presently, Arya holds the position of Secretary General at the Birsa Ambedkar Phule Students’ Association (BAPSA). Recently, she became the general secretary in the Jawaharlal Nehru Student Union (JNUSU) elections.
