When Punjab National Bank (PNB), the second-largest state-owned bank by assets, disclosed a significant fraud case in 2018, the financial industry in India was rocked. The fraud, which totalled around Rs. 13,500 crores, was linked to a single Mumbai branch. The fraud, which rocked the financial and corporate worlds, was allegedly orchestrated by high-profile people including billionaire jeweller Nirav Modi and his uncle Mehul Choksi, who was then the managing director of Gitanjali Gems.
Nirav Modi and Mehul Choksi are charged with working with a few dishonest bank workers to get access to the bank’s systems in order to obtain fictitious Letters of Undertaking (LoUs), which allowed them to embezzle enormous sums of money under the guise of trade finance. The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) received the PNB’s first fraud report on January 29, 2018.
The bank then filed a criminal complaint with the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI). PNB submitted a second fraud report and a CBI complaint on February 7. By February 13, the Nirav Modi Group, the Gitanjali Group, and Chandri Paper & Allied Products Pvt Ltd became the targets of a formal complaint.
Mehul is married to Preeti aka Priti Choksi and the two share two kids together, a daughter Priyana and a son Rohan.
Choksi and his wife reportedly relocated from Antigua to Belgium and in 2025, reports from Antiguan media said that Mehul and Preeti Choksi are considering settling in Geneva. Mehul Choksi and his wife, Preeti, obtained F-Residency cards in Belgium and Preeti, a Belgian citizen, has family ties in the country, as does Choksi’s extended family.
Age 65 Mehul Choksi allegedly obtained Belgian residency using falsified documents and is said to be considering a move to Switzerland for treatment of cancer.
It is thought that Mehul Choksi and his Belgian wife, Preeti, were residing in Antwerp, Belgium before his arrest. Choksi’s son and two daughters, however, appear to have kept quiet about the incident.
In December 2010, Choksi’s daughter, Priyanka Choksi married Belgian diamond tycoon Aakash Mehta. Sonu Nigam performed during the wedding, which was held at Jodhpur’s Umaid Bhawan and Mehrangarh Fort. Foreign visitors attended, and crores of rupees were spent. In India, Priyanka introduced the A.Jaffe Bridal brand from New York.
At the moment, Priyanka and her spouse, Akash Mehta, reside in Belgium. She hasn’t, however, made any public remarks on the subject of Mehul’s arrest.
There is also very little information available regarding their location or occupation. Meanwhile, it’s still unclear where his son Rohan Choksi is. These relatives are thought to be living overseas as well and have avoided contact with the detectives. They both attended Priyanka’s wedding, though. The entire family was visible in the picture that was made public.
Rohan Choksi is married to Snagda Talera, the daughter of Neha Talera of Talera Auto.
Rohan Choksi, his wife Snagda, and aunt Neena Seth operated Voyager Brands located in Austin, Texas and this brand was part of Mehul Choksi’s business network in America.
Rohan was also in a leadership role at Samuels Jewelers.
Priyanka Chokshi, the eldest daughter of diamond businessman Mehul Chokshi, is a millionaire and has been one of the key figures in launching the luxury bridal brand A.Jaffe in India. Priyanka got married to diamond trader Akash Mehta in 2010 and according to one report, after marriage, Priyanka and Akash Mehta had shifted to Belgium.
Choksi who was the chairman and managing director of Gitanjali Gems and built brands such as Gili, Aasmi, Sangini and D’Damas, and opened over 4,000 stores across the country claimed to have a net worth of Rs 20,000 crore and his annual turnover had reached Rs 12,500 crore before the scam.
CBI and ED investigations led to the seizure of Chowksi’s assets worth over ₹2,565 crore in India, including Mercedes cars, flats, industrial units and expensive jewellery.
