Praveen Sood, who is currently the Director General of Police in the state of Karnataka, has been given the important position of new director of the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).
Once Subodh Kumar Jaiswal’s term ends on May 25, this 59-year-old veteran will take up the role for two years. His appointment to this crucial position was approved by a high-level committee made up of notable individuals, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud, and Leader of the Opposition Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury.
However, the news of his appointment has generated a lot of debate for different reasons. He has been discussed widely because, in March, Karnataka Congress chairman DK Shivakumar, who might become the next Karnataka Chief Minister, called DGP Praveen Sood a “nalayak” (incompetent) and threatened to take action against him if his party won power.
On the one hand, the Congress party has secured a resounding victory in Karnataka; on the other hand, Praveen Sood will be relocating to Delhi to assume his new responsibilities as the CBI director for the next two years. Praveen Sood is a renowned Indian IPS officer. He has been in the news because he was recently appointed as the new director of the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).
He is a prominent member of the Indian Police Service (IPS) and a member of the prestigious Karnataka cadre. He joined the service in 1986 and is renowned for being one of the most senior IPS officers in the country.
His academic efforts have brought him to prestigious universities such as Syracuse University in New York, IIT-Delhi, and IIM-Bangalore. He is currently 59 years old. The details of his family aren’t known.
