The Matildas star and partner Kristie Mewis were out celebrating Kerr’s hat-trick of goals in an FA Cup match for Chelsea two years ago in London when the incident took place in January 2023.

After one of the passengers vomited and damaged the rear glass of the car, the driver protested that the passengers would not pay for the cleanup. The maximum penalty under UK law is 26 weeks in jail for Kerr’s actions with the trial currently ongoing as video footage in court showed her being racist towards Met police constable Stephen Lovell. She is currently charged with racially aggravated harassment of a police officer in the Kingston-upon-Thames Crown Court.

Kerr is accused of becoming “abusive and insulting” to police officer Stephen Lovell while he was at the police station. A jury at Kingston Crown Court on Monday seen footage from Lovell’s body camera, in which Kerr tells Lovell, “Honestly, you guys are f***ing stupid and white.”

“He was shocked, upset, and humiliated by the defendant’s remarks towards PC Lovell,” prosecutor Bill Emlyn Jones told the jury.

Central to the case is 30 minutes of vision and sound from the bodycam worn by the officer when Kerr and Mewis were at Twickenham police station after being accused of vomiting in a taxi and kicking the taxi’s back window out and on parts of the tape played to the court, PC Lovell offered Kerr the chance to pay $2,000 for the damage or be charged but she insisted on contacting Chelsea Football Club’s lawyer and asked for the officer to wait for the lawyer to call.

Lawyer Grace Forbes, defending Sam Kerr, told jurors on Monday, “Nobody disputes the words that were said. But simple words, even words like these, do not make you guilty of a criminal offence.”

Emlyn Jones gave the court a timeline of the alleged incidents, stating that Kerr and Mewis thought the driver was kidnapping them because he wouldn’t let them go when she became ill in the car.

First, the cabbie complained to the police that a woman in his car was trying to break a window.

An emergency services phone operator then suggested that the driver travel to Twickenham Police Station. When the cab driver parked behind their marked police car and honked to draw the cops’ attention, PC Lovell and another officer arrived on the scene first.
