Pleasant Rowland is a well-known American American educator, reporter, writer, entrepreneur, and philanthropist. She has been in the news because her American Girl doll company come under fire for promoting gender transitions.

She was born Pleasant Williams Thiele and now identifies as Pleasant Thiele Rowland. She was born on March 8, 1942, in Chicago. Her father’s name is Edward Thiele, former Leo Burnett ad agency president. She has 3 siblings including 2 sisters and one brother.

She did her graduation from Wells College in 1962. She was awarded an honorary doctorate in humane letters by Edgewood College in Madison, Wisconsin, on September 22, 2010.

Pleasant Rowland became a teacher after graduation. From 1968 until 1971, she worked as a news anchor and reporter for the ABC affiliate KGO-TV.

For $700 million, Pleasant Rowland sold the Pleasant Company (now American Girl) to Mattel in 1998. She acquired Aurora, New York-based MacKenzie-Childs in 2001 when it went bankrupt. After making it profitable, she sold MacKenzie-Childs to Twin Lakes Capital co-owners Lee Feldman and Howard Cohen in 2008.

Later, she established the nonprofit Rowland Reading Foundation in 2003.
