However, Mackenzie, who is a biological male, asserted that she encounters significant competitive disadvantages when playing against women. She explained that she began transitioning at a very young age, and as a result, she “never went through male puberty” but only experienced female puberty. Mackenzie emphasized her belief that all transgender individuals should be included in sports, but acknowledged the unique challenges her situation presents.

“I believe all trans people should be included in sport. But it’s especially infuriating to me because I’m playing and being forced to play at a major biological disadvantage,” she had said. “I never went through a male puberty. I only went through a female puberty. And I don’t have ovaries, I don’t have testicles, so I have zero way of making any testosterone.”

Mackenzie, who stands at 6ft 2in, has garnered attention not only for her impressive performance but also for allegations of mistreatment by an opposing team and its coach. She and her Vancouver Island teammates had been scheduled to play against Columbia Bible College (CBC) in Abbotsford, British Columbia, but expressed concerns about their safety. Following their games in October, Mackenzie accused CBC’s coach, Taylor Claggett, of promoting rough play and verbally attacking her.

In an Instagram post from October 30, Mackenzie claimed that Coach Claggett “cornered” a staff member from Vancouver Island and voiced objections to Mackenzie playing in women’s basketball, during a “tirade” after their first match. Mackenzie also described an incident where Claggett allegedly cheered on an aggressive play against her on the court. After these incidents, Mackenzie received upsetting calls from her coach, who informed her of social media posts made by someone connected to Claggett.

Mackenzie, who began her transition in kindergarten and had never undergone male puberty, accused CBC of attempting to injure her during their second match. She shared videos on social media showing a CBC player throwing her to the ground, and one clip seemingly showing Claggett applauding the action from the sidelines. In response to the allegations, CBC issued a statement defending Coach Claggett, stating that her actions were intended to ensure the safety of her players.

Tensions between the teams heightened when all 13 players on the Vancouver Island squad signed a letter to the Pacific Western Athletic Association (PACWEST), the conference overseeing both teams. The players stated that they did not feel safe playing against CBC following the events of the previous games. Mackenzie’s comments continue to underscore the complexities surrounding the participation of transgender athletes in sports, as she advocates for a more inclusive environment.
