For the first time since 2013, when they squared off in a blockbuster match at the Stade Charles Konan Banny de Yamoussoukro in the Ivory Coast capital, the Blue Sharks, perhaps one of the most dominant teams, took on South Africa at the continental extravaganza.

South Africa prevailed 2-1 in the penalty shootout to salvage a contest that had been 0-0 in regulation time. In the penalty shootout, Patrick Andrade’s mistake sent South Africa into the semifinals despite their two misses. Cape Verde missed three straight attempts.

From the beginning of the competition, Cape Verde has performed above expectations; they shocked Ghana in their opening game and finished their group ahead of the all-time winners, Egypt. With eight goals in their first four games, they were the tournament’s second-highest scorers.
