A shift in management and internal structure
Graham Potter replaced Thomas Tuchel as the manager back in September after the club sacked Tuchel.
Following the new appointment, Graham brought along Bruno Saltor, Kyle Macaulay, Ben Roberts, Bjorn Hamberg and Billy Reid from Brighton. Prior to the move, the group played a major role in Brighton’s success under Potter.
Chelsea’s new co-owners Todd Boehly and Clearlake Capital are currently in the middle of a restructuring of the club’s structure and it looks like the 47-year-old manager seems to be part of the long-term plan.
Talks about Paul Winstanley began last year and continued to happen throughout the remainder of October and November. As such, Winstanley’s appointment was sealed. While his salary at Chelsea isn’t known, Chelsea agreed a compensation package with Brighton for his services.
Paul Winstanley Career
Prior to his current role, Paul Winstanley spent nine years playing as a professional footballer at Manchester City from 1991-2000. He then moved onto analytical work at Wigan Athletic in 2003 following his retirement from his player career.
While working there as a performance analyst manager, Paul helped the team achieve promotion to the Premier League. Winstanley also played an important role in helping the side reach the 2005/06 League Cup final. He departed in 2008 and joined Derby County, as the head of analysis for six years.
Ever since then, he joined Brighton in 2014, and he has worked as a talent identification manager before becoming the head of recruitment at Brighton. Winstanley earned great reputation in recent seasons following some of the top signings that Brighton has made.
Under Winstanley, Brighton managed to sign players like Yves Bissouma, now at Tottenham, Leandro Trossard and Moises Caicedo who have all had major breakthroughs at Brighton.
Another player Karou Mitoma also looks set to join alongside those great signings. The youngster joined Brighton over the summer from J1 League side Kawasaki Frontale. The 25-year-old arrived for £2.5million, and he has already scored twice in his last two appearances against Wolves and Arsenal.
