Former Everton defender Paul Holmes has tragically left us for his heavenly abode at the age of 56.

Holmes, who played as a right-back, died peacefully after a battle with cancer, leaving behind his wife, Kate.

Holmes started his career at Birmingham City before joining Everton in 1993, where he made 28 appearances.

Tributes Poured In

Tributes have poured in on social media for the former footballer after fans learned about the distressing news of Holmes’ demise. One fan wrote, “RIP Paul. Deepest sympathy to your family and friends.”

A former Everton teammate Ian Snodin took to X as he shared his tribute to Holmes. He penned, “I knew Paul was unwell, but I am deeply shocked by his passing.

“He was a fine player and a great person to have in the dressing room. He got along well with everyone, and it’s a shame he didn’t get to play more games.”

Club Release Statement

Everton also issued a statement expressing their sadness at Holmes’ passing, noting his brave fight against cancer.

“Everyone at Everton Football Club is deeply saddened by the death of our former defender Paul Holmes,” the statement read. “Paul was just 56 years old. RIP, Paul.”

About Holmes

Holmes came from a footballing family; his father, Albert Holmes, was a legend at Chesterfield, playing for the club from 1960 to 1976.

56 year old Paul Holmes was born on February 18, 1968, and had a long and successful career, making more than 400 appearances in the Football League and Premier League.

His standout moment with the Toffees was in September 1993 when he contributed to Everton’s 2-0 win over Liverpool in the Merseyside derby, with goals from Mark Ward and Tony Cottee.

Holmes’ final game for Everton came in October 1995, in a goalless draw against Feyenoord during the European Cup Winners’ Cup.

He left the club in 1996 to join West Bromwich Albion, where he played until 1999. He later joined Torquay United and retired in 2003.

The 5 ft 10 in (1.78 m) tall playe” played for Doncaster Rovers, Torquay United, Birmingham City, Everton, and West Bromwich Albion. He died in May 2024, at the age of 56, following a long battle with cancer diagnosed in 2023.
