For the unfamiliar, Bayern was eliminated from the Champions League semi-finals after a 2-1 loss at the Bernabeu Stadium.

In the aftermath of the result, Vardrid started trending on Twitter/X due to the referee’s decision to blow his whistle and rule an offside opposing to the laws. Vardrid is a term used to mock Real Madrid owing to what many football fans believe is a clear bias present in the game of referees and the VAR favouring Real Madrid during matches.

What Exactly Happened During Bayern Munich vs Real Madrid Match

Bayern took the lead with a stunning goal from Alphonso Davies, while goalkeeper Manuel Neuer made some excellent saves to maintain their advantage.

However, Real Madrid ultimately secured the victory to advance to the final.

However, a blunder by Neuer allowed Joselu to snatch the ball and slide it into the net to level the score in the 88th minute.

Just two minutes later, Real Madrid went ahead in the game and the overall tie, with Joselu converting a cross from Antonio Rudiger, igniting pandemonium inside the Bernabeu.

This came after VAR overturned a call to disallow the goal due to offside. Bayern thought they had scored when Konrad Laimer drilled Thomas Muller’s knockdown into the bottom corner, but referee Szymon Marciniak had already stopped play, signaling offside.

Since the whistle was blown during the play, VAR could not review or overturn the decision.

Replays indicated that the offside call was extremely close, leading to frustration among Bayern players, who were upset that the play was halted prematurely.

What Did Thomas Tuchel Say?

Speaking after the match, Tuchel revealed that the assistant referee apologized to the Bayern players right after the controversial incident.

He stated, “The linesman’s decision was terrible, and the referee’s call was just as bad. It feels like we’ve been betrayed because of that call. Still, we have to congratulate Real Madrid.”

Tuchel concluded, “It was a really poor decision, and it went against the rules. It’s a hard pill to swallow, but that’s how it is.”
