Para shooter Rubina Francis earned a bronze medal in the women’s 10m air pistol SH1 event at the Paris 2024 Paralympics, scoring 211.1 in the final held on Saturday. Sareh Javanmardi of the Islamic Republic of Iran clinched the gold medal with a score of 236.8, while Aysel Ozgan of Turkiye took the silver with 231.1.

Rubina had previously competed in the same event at Tokyo 2020, reaching the final but finishing seventh with a score of 128.5. At Paris 2024, she qualified for the final with a score of 556 in the qualification round, placing sixth.

Who is Rubina Francis?

Rubina Francis who is a Christian by religion was born into a lower-middle-class family, facing the challenges of a leg dysfunction. Her father, Simon Francis, a mechanic, worked tirelessly to nurture her growing passion for shooting, despite their financial struggles. Inspired by Gagan Narang’s Olympic achievements, Rubina embarked on her shooting journey in 2015.

Her father Simon Francis is a mechanic in Jabalpur and her mother works in a hospital as a nurse. Rubina Francis born on 25 June, 1999 is a 25 year old shooter from Jabalpur, Madhya Pradesh. She was born with a disability in her leg.

Undeterred by the obstacles, Rubina joined Jabalpur’s Gun for Glory Academy in 2017. By 2021, she had achieved a notable ranking of fifth by the International Shooting Sport Federation in the Women’s 10m Air Pistol SH1 category. Her international career began with participation in the 2018 Asian Para Games, where she competed in the P2 – Women’s 10M Air Pistol SH1 events.

During 2022, Rubina clinched a gold medal at the World Shooting Para Sport Championships in Al Ain, United Arab Emirates. In July 2024, Rubina earned her berth at the 2024 Summer Paralympics in Paris under the bipartite rule. Leading up to the 2024 Paralympics, Rubina had a superb season, winning a silver medal at the Para World Championships 2023 in Peru, and securing a bronze at the Asian Para Games in Hangzhou.

In the SH1 shooting class, athletes compete with impairments affecting one arm and/or their legs, often due to conditions like amputations or spinal cord injuries. Depending on their needs, they may shoot from a standing position or while seated in a wheelchair or chair.
