Following news of Alpine CEO Laurent Rossi’s resignation last week, Szafnauer departed his position to work on special projects for the wider Renault Group. Alpine’s 34-year team veteran sporting director Alan Permane will also depart, and chief technical officer Pat Fry has left in preparation for his November 1 transition to Williams.

A look at who is Otmar Szafnauer

Otmar Szafnauer was born on 13 August 1964 and is currently 58 years old.

The Force India Formula 1 Team, which eventually became Aston Martin, was the most well-known team Otmar Szafnauer managed in Formula One. For the longest time, he has served as team principal for one of the most famous racing series in the world.

Szafnauer was born in Romania but later migrated to the US, where he spent the most of his childhood years. His mother was Romanian, and his father was German-born with American citizenship. He received his schooling from American institutions. He began working for Ford in 1986, following the completion of his education, and spent 12 years there.

Otmar is married to Rebecca Szafnauer and the couple has had a loving marriage for several years. The pair has three kids. A son named Fin, who is a golfer, besides two daughters, namely Olivia and Clara.

He tried to pursue a racing career in addition to working for Ford. Szafnauer participated in Formula Ford races, but his efforts were unsuccessful. He ceased competing in any on-track events after realising that management is where he shines. Only Christian Horner and Franz Tost’s team principals have been in Formula 1 longer than Otmar. Otmar, however, has led a few teams as team principal, unlike the previous two.

He left Ford in 1998 and worked as the operations director for the BAR Formula 1 team. At the time, the BAR F1 team wasn’t exactly successful. After a while, he began looking for other options in the sport. Honda had big aspirations in 2001 when it was just beginning to consider entering the Formula 1. As the Vice President of Honda Racing Developments, Otmar was employed by Honda. He was named Team Principal of the Vijay Mallya-owned Force India Formula 1 team a year later.

Eventually, Mike Krack took over Szafnauer’s position. The experienced F1 team manager departed Aston Martin and joined the competing F1 Team Alpine. However, this stay would only be temporary. The team and Otmar voluntarily decided to part ways after the 2023 Belgian Grand Prix after just two years.
