Who is Oliver Glasner?
Oliver Glasner is a former footballer and professional football manager from Austria who was born on August 28, 1974 in Scharding, Austria. The 49-year-old stands 1.81 m (5 ft 11 in) tall.
A look at Oliver Glasner’s career
Oliver was an Austrian youth international defender who played nearly exclusively for the Austrian Bundesliga team SV Ried, where he won the Austrian Cup in 1998 and 2011. After retiring, Glasner served as Red Bull Salzburg’s assistant coach until taking a job back at Ried as head coach in 2014.
After achieving promotion to the Bundesliga and leading the team to a runners-up place in his final season, he went on to manage LASK for four seasons. He qualified for Europe in both of his seasons as head coach of VfL Wolfsburg, a Bundesliga team, after being hired in 2019.
Upon taking over as head coach of Eintracht Frankfurt in 2021, he guided the team to the Champions League knockout rounds and the DFB-Pokal final in his second and last season. In his first season, the club won the UEFA Europa League.
They defeated West Ham of the Premier League and Barcelona, the dominant team in Europe, at Camp Nou during their journey to the final in Seville. The Germans won the trophy for the first time since 1980 in the final, which featured them against Scottish team Rangers.
The match was intense, ending in extra time with a 1-1 draw. The Germans prevailed 5-4 on penalties. They also made history by qualifying for the Champions League with their victory.
After making it to another cup final in their second season, Glasner lost the DFB Pokal final 2-0 against RB Leipzig. After the 2022–2023 season, the Austrian departed.
Oliver Glasner’s preferred formation
3-4-2-1
Glasner tends to use a 3-4-2-1 with wingbacks. In the first few games, Glasner played Frankfurt in a back four, just like his 4-3-3 at Wolfsburg as well but things did not go well, so he reverted his side to a back three system that succeeded.
In the offensive organizations, their key players were Daichi Kamada and Filip Kostić. Both were the regular starters who played on the left side, and this was the flank that became the main source of threat and the 3-4-3 or 3-4-2-1 formation had two 6s, which allowed Schlappekicker to play with a 3-2 structure in the construction phases proceed the ball forward.
The PPDA of Frankfurt in Bundesliga was 9.63, ranking 7th in the league and shows they would press high but the engagement line was not too high, they only did that on occasions. Glasner’s pressing was not about man-man, instead, his side defended with the focus of closing spaces in the centre.
His new deal at Frankfurt extended his contract until 2026 and he earns €3m a year.
