In the largest change to Kyiv’s military leadership since Russia’s incursion over two years ago, Ukraine’s senior commander, Valery Zaluzhny, was ousted from his position on Thursday. Succeeding him, Colonel-General Oleksandr Syrsky was named as the next Commander-in-Chief of the Ukrainian Armed Forces.

The announcement was made by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. According to Xinhua news agency, Zelensky stated on Thursday in a Telegram message,
A new management team will take over the leadership of the Ukrainian Armed Forces starting today.
The President said that Oleksandr Syrsky was “the most experienced Ukrainian commander” and that he had successfully defended Kyiv during the operation.

Who is Oleksandr Syrskyi?
Oleksandr Syrsky is a Ukranian military officer. He has been in the news because he was recently appointed as the next Commander-in-Chief of the Ukrainian Armed Forces.
His full name is Oleksandr Stanislavovych Syrskyi and he was born on 26 July 1965 in Novinki, Russian SFSR, Soviet Union. But in the 1980s, Syrskyi relocated to Ukraine.
After completing his schooling, Oleksandr Syrsky graduated from the Moscow Higher Military Command School.

His career
Oleksandr Syrskyi’s military journey began in the Soviet Artillery Corps before relocating to Ukraine in the 1980s. As he advanced through the ranks, he became major-general and oversaw the 72nd Mechanized Brigade.
He was a key figure in the Debaltseve war and directed anti-terrorist operations, making him noteworthy for his involvement in the Donbas conflict. Syrskyi was awarded the Order of Bohdan Khmelnytsky III degree for his outstanding leadership and went on to become lieutenant-general.
Oleksandr Syrsky then assumed leadership of the Joint Operational Headquarters and the Anti-Terrorist Operation in eastern Ukraine. In August 2019, he was designated as the Commander of the Ground Forces, with the exceptional title of colonel general.
He was awarded the Hero of Ukraine medal for organizing the defense of Kyiv during the Russian invasion. Reports credited him with devising the successful Kharkiv counteroffensive. Syrsky was an important player in the continuing struggle, acting as the commander of the Ukrainian Eastern Grouping of Forces and spokesperson.
