In the NCAA Championship semifinals, McKenzie Long ran a breathtaking 21.95 seconds to take the lead in the women’s 200-meter sprint and regain the world record.

Who is McKenzie Long?

McKenzie Long is an American track and field athlete. The 23 year old sprinter was born on July 11, 2000 and attended the Pickerington High School Central in Ohio.

After her incredible run at the SEC performance last month, Long has significantly expanded her lead in the world with her most recent victory.

Following her victory in the Ohio 60-meter indoor state title, Long made her commitment to the North Carolina State University in October 2017. She was there for four years however, her skills were limited following injury. 

She suffered a serious hip injury that took a year to recover, which kept her out of the 2021 and 2022 outdoor and indoor seasons. In May 2022, she set a state record for North Carolina in the 200 meters with a time of 23.00.

She ended sixth place in the 60 meters and second place in the 200 meters at the 2023 SEC indoor championships. The athlete took fourth place in the 200 meters and eighth place in the 60 meters at the 2023 NCAA indoor championships.

McKenzie, a sprinter at the University of Mississippi, defeated Jacious Sears, Kaila Jackson, and Talitha Diggs to win the 200-meter SEC Championship in 2023 in 22.39 seconds. In Gainesville, Florida, in May 2024, she continued to hold her title.

In the process, she recorded a wind-legal personal best time of 22.03 (+0.6), setting a world record and an SEC meet record. This put her fifth in collegiate history and 22nd all-time in the US. 

Apart from her heroics on field, she also has done some voluntary work in some charity projects for the well being of the people in need. Talking about one instance, she worked as a volunteer in a project which supported food sustainability and security.
