In a hearing on January 3, the Supreme Court expressed grave concern over the rising number of suicides among students, especially those from marginalized communities. The Court was particularly alarmed after learning that 115 suicides occurred at IITs alone between 2004 and 2024. Justice Surya Kant emphasized the Court’s intention to monitor the issue closely, ensuring the effective implementation of the 2012 Regulations aimed at addressing such cases.

How the authorities reacted to the suicide of Nilay Patel?

Following this incident, the All India OBC Students’ Association (AIOBSCA) has called for transparency and accountability from the institution in the wake of Nilay’s death. The association demands clarity from the authorities and urges the administration to address concerns raised by students from marginalized communities, particularly regarding caste-based discrimination and the lack of proper support systems.

Nilay Patel’s death comes at a time when the Supreme Court of India is hearing a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) filed by the mothers of Rohith Vemula and Payal Tadvi, two students from marginalized communities who tragically took their own lives after reportedly facing caste-based harassment. Rohith Vemula, a PhD scholar at Hyderabad Central University, died by suicide in January 2016, allegedly due to caste discrimination. Similarly, Payal Tadvi, an Adivasi student at TN Topiwala National Medical College in Mumbai, also died by suicide in May 2019 after enduring harassment from upper-caste peers.
