Alvin Kamara, the running back for the New Orleans Saints, collided with a sideline official during a game against the Detroit Lions on Monday, likely breaking his leg. This incident serves as yet another reminder that nobody is safe on an NFL field.

Members of the chain crew must be covered since they are also at a high risk of injury. Holding down the first marker was Piazza’s responsibility while working on the sidelines.

Piazza, who was carrying the first down marker on the sideline, was critically injured as Saints running back Alvin Kamara was being pursued to the sideline. Alvin Kamara was tackled by the Detroit Lions players after quarterback Derek Carr launched a pass in his direction. Unable to maintain his footing, Kamara struck Piazza. He fell to the ground, and cameras captured his leg twisting strangely.

The worker attempted to jump out of the way, but he couldn’t avoid the impact and went down. The man was shown on camera in agony, his leg twisted in an awkward way. When Piazza’s injuries became obvious, the TV coverage broke away abruptly, showing just a small portion of his leg.

After Piazza’s medical teams finished their treatment, play was halted. The NFL sideline worker was taken off the pitch on a stretcher, his leg cast on. Initially, a Saints spokesperson said that Piazza was brought to a nearby hospital with a dislocated knee. The Saints announced on Monday that Piazza sustained a fractured fibula in addition to a dislocated knee in the collision.

The good news about this incident is that Piazza’s blood vessels did not sustain any damage and were unharmed.

Meanwhile, the Lions went on to defeat the Saints 33-28, raising their record to 10-3 and lowering New Orleans to 5-7.
