Who was Nathaniel Gordon?

Nathaniel Gordon was a sophomore at the University of Pennsylvania. He has been in the news because he tragically passed away on 23rd March at the Penn Presbyterian Medical Center.

He graduated with 36 college credits from high school and an almost perfect grade point average and was the first of the participants of the Philadelphia School District alternative program in recent years to attend an Ivy League.

Growing up in rural Georgia, 20 year old Nathaniel was homeschooled and had to move to Philadelphia to live with a relative due to challenges in his family. However, he ended up in foster care.

He was born and brought up in Covington, Georgia. Later, when he was thirteen, he moved to Philadelphia.

Nathaniel Gordon went through the Community College of Philadelphia’s Gateway to College Program to finish high school in spite of obstacles related to his family and his transition out of foster care. He received academic help from this program and was able to obtain college credit while still a high school student.

Gordon then enrolled at the University of Pennsylvania, where he was a part of the Makuu: The Black Cultural Center community and an active participant in the Pre-First Year Program.

His commitment to service extended to his internship with State Senator Sharif Street (D-Philadelphia), where he dedicated himself to facilitating voter registration and assisting constituents.
