Investigation continues in Monterey park mass shooting
Authorities had arrested 72-year-old Huu Can Tran of Hemet on suspicion of murder following a shooting at a dance studio in Monterey Park. But Tran shot himself in the head in the parking lot of a Torrance strip mall at the intersection of Sepulveda and Hawthorne boulevards. Authorities are still trying to determine a motive.
Several pieces of evidence were discovered during the investigation of the van that connected the suspect to both sites. Authorities said they recovered a weapon from the stolen van. Police in Alhambra have identified the weapon as a magazine-fed semiautomatic assault handgun with an extended magazine. The state of California prohibits the possession of firearms like this one due to the extended magazine.
