What I wanted to see the most in tonight's Spain Women v Sweden Women was Montse Tomé.
I knew the game would be tough and that Spain wouldn't change the way they play; so, the proceedings would come down to personnel and adjustments and substitutions the head coach would make. pic.twitter.com/fJqA4epZeA

Montse Tome becomes new head coach of Spain women’s national football team
The Spanish football federation (RFEF) has appointed assistant Montse Tome as the new head coach after sacking Jorge Vilda. The Spanish federation sacked Jorge Vilda in early September following the recent Luis Rubiales scandal. Jorge served as the Spanish Women’s head coach for eight years and recently led them to the World Cup title.
Notably, Tome’s appointment is a historic one as she is the first female head coach in Spanish women’s football history. However, Montse Tome’s appointment is not seen as a permanent move and there is still some concern over how the federation will proceed into the upcoming four-year cycle. Montse Tome made her debut as Spain head coach against World No. 1-ranked Sweden on Friday, September 22. The match was a part of the UEFA Nations League and Spain emerged victorious 3-2 following a goal from a penalty during stoppage time.
According to reports, the RFEF chose Tome on the players’ request to appoint a female head coach. However, the players are not fully satisfied of Tome’s rise from assistant to head coach as such, there is plenty of controversy around the latest selection.

Jorge Vilda sacked as Spain women’s national team coach
Following the World Cup scandal where Spanish FA boss Luis Rubiales kissed forward Jenni Jennifer Hermoso at last month’s final, Spanish football has been left in a state of disarray. According to reports, Vilda approved of Rubiales’ extraordinary comments during a press conference. During the press conference, Rubiales repeatedly refused to resign and hit out at “fake feminists”.
On hearing about this, all the 11 members of Vilda’s backroom resigned in protest over the ongoing crisis. This happened after a group of 81 players boycotted the national team in protest of the incident. Moreover, some players have even gone on to refuse a national team call up until the situation ends. In fact, fifteen members of the World Cup winning squad from last month did not feature in Tome’s first squad selection against Sweden.
