Michael Bosworth was a teenage high school student who was shot at around 3 a.m. on a Saturday morning in a neighborhood near McKenzie Lane. According to official reports from the Spotsylvania County Sheriff’s Office, the incident occurred after Bosworth and two other teens were taking part in a “ding-dong ditch” prank. The “ding-dong ditch” prank is a social media challenge where people ring doorbells and run away, often filming the entire stunt for TikTok.
Mr. Tyler Chase Butler, who is the owner of the house that Michael and his friends were pranking, allegedly opened fire on the teens. He shot them in the belief that they were attempting to break into his home. Butler shot Bosworth and another teenager in the gunfire, following which Bosworth later died from his injuries at the hospital. Meanwhile, the second teen was treated and later released. The third teenager reportedly managed to escape uninjured.
According to the official court documents, the teenagers later admitted that they were filming themselves for TikTok while pulling pranks in the neighborhood. The case has unsurprisingly sparked all kinds of debate regarding social media challenges, homeowner rights, and gun violence. Authorities have since arrested Butler and charged him with second-degree murder, malicious wounding, and use of a firearm in the commission of a felony. As of now, Tyler Butler remains in custody facing multiple charges.

“You were the best boyfriend, person, brother, son and friend that anyone could ask for,” Malinda Garcia, Bosworth’s girlfriend, wrote in an Instagram post.
Spotsylvania County deputies this week arrested Tyler Chase Butler, aged 27, in the incident on charges of second-degree murder, malicious wounding and use of a firearm in commission of a felony.
