The South Australian Women’s National Premier League’s Metro United WFC has recruited Indian women’s senior team goalkeeper Elangbam Panthoi Chanu.

The 28-year-old will make Australian league football history as the first Indian football player. She will train with Adelaide United, an A-League team, as part of the relocation and is exoected to make her debute very soon; on Saturday.

Who is Elangbam Panthoi Chanu?

Elangbam Panthoi Chanu is a goalkeeper from India who recently signed Metro United WFC in the South Australian Women’s National Premier League. The 28-year-old hails from Keirak village near Imphal and was born on 1 February 1996 in Keirak, Thoubal, Manipur, India. She stands 1.70 m (5 ft 7 in) tall.

A look at Elangbam Panthoi Chanu’s career so far

Before relocating to Eastern Sporting Union in 2012, she began her career at the Women Football Academy Kakching. She participated in the Indian Women’s League and the regional Manipur Women’s League on behalf of Eastern Sporting Union and Manipur Police.

She relocated to Spain in December 2022 with Bala Devi, where they performed a training and trial stay at the Spanish Segunda Federación team Málaga.

Panthoi has had a significant influence on teams and competitions throughout the years, whether it is with her club Eastern Sporting Union or the national squad. When she was named the Indian Women’s League’s best goalkeeper in 2017–18, it was her breakout season. For the young stopper, it has been an unrelenting journey ever since.

Chanu has a full season contract that extends until November, and she will play roughly eighteen games for Metro United WFC in the South Australian Women’s National Premier League starting on Thursday. According to Paul Morris, head coach of Metro United WFC, she will also train at Adelaide United FC, an A-League team.

She is set to become the first Indian football player to play professionally in Australia thanks to this agreement.
