Similar to what happened with Mahsa Amini, Iranian forces have denied any wrongdoing in the murder of the young chef and said they will reveal the cause of death later.
According to allegations in the local media, Shahidi was detained by the Iranian Revolutionary Guards Corp (IRGC) intelligence in Arak after being taken into custody during a demonstration and brutally beaten to death with batons.

Who Was Mehrshad Shahidi?
Mehrshad Shahidi was a well-known young Iranian chef. He has been in the news because he was murdered recently allegedly by Iranian security forces for participating in anti-hijab and anti-government protests.
When he died, he was just 19 years old. He was sometimes referred to as Jamie Oliver of Iran. On Instagram, where he had 25,000 followers, he frequently shared videos of himself cooking.
In addition to being a well-known social media celebrity, he served as the University of Arak’s chief chef. Students at the university called him an “energetic and handsome popular man.” He reportedly also worked at Boote Restaurant.
How Did He Die?
According to The Telegraph, Mehrshad Shahidi was detained by the Revolutionary Guard in Arak city on October 25 while returning home when he was stopped during a demonstration and reportedly beaten to death with batons. He had multiple skull injuries.
The 19-year-old passed away only one day before turning 20 after suffering head injuries, but his family said they were pushed to declare that he had a heart attack.
However, Iranian government representatives apparently denied any involvement in the chef’s murder. According to Abdolmehdi Mousavi, Chief Justice of Markazi Province (where Arak is located), Shahidi’s limbs, legs, head, or brain showed “no signs” of fractures.
Yet, a lot of people on social media blamed the Iranian military for his death while in the Revolutionary Guard’s custody. On Saturday, a sizable crowd gathered in the streets of Iran for Mehrshad Shahidi’s burial. They shouted a variety of anti-regime chants.
