A look at Max Dehning’s career so far

Dehning has gained attention after his incredible performance at the German Winter Throwing Championships last week, when he became the youngest athlete to ever reach the elusive 90-meter milestone in the men’s javelin throw.

It all started in a very young age but not with the athletics. He was from Leverkusen and played football and handball as a boy. He had a strong love for sports from an early age however, his interest from other sports to athletics changed through his sibling. Through his heptathlon-competing older sister Marie, he was introduced to athletics and is now making waves in track and field.

At the 2023 European Athletics U20 Championships in Jerusalem in August 2023, Dehning won a silver medal with a throw of 78.07 metres. With a throw of 90.20 metres in the Winter Throwing Championships in Halle on February 25, 2024, Dehning, at 19 years old, became the youngest man to throw over 90 metres.

This shattered the world record at the time, set in 1990 by Steve Backley’s European U23 record of 89.58 metres.
