on behalf of my family, it is with the heaviest of hearts that I share that my younger brother, Matthew, passed away due to an accidental overdose over the weekend. My family and I are heartbroken and ask for privacy during this difficult time.”

Matthew Spezza is the brother of former NHL player Jason Spezza who currently served as the assistant general manager of the Pittsburgh Penguins. Matt recently passed away last weekend. He was 37 years old at the time of his death.
Matt was born to parents Rino Spezza and Donna Spezza. He has two siblings named Jason Spezza and Michelle Spezza. Jason and his brother, Matthew , shared a good relationship growing up. During Jason’s up-and-coming years in the big leagues, Matthew often attended his games at the Ontario Hockey League rinks to support and cheer for his older brother.

Matthew played as a professional hockey player for a few seasons in the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League. Unlike his brother, he played as a goaltender and had a stint with the St. John’s Fog Devils. He later spent a couple of seasons playing major junior hockey in the mid-2000s in the Ontario Hockey League. During his time there, he played for the Ottawa 67’s, Kingston Frontenacs, London Knights, and Sault St. Marie Greyhounds.
