The opposition parties may not succeed in winning the race for the next president and vice president (VP), but they are putting up a valiant fight nevertheless. Margaret Alva, a seasoned Congress politician, is their candidate for the VP elections, which will take place on August 6.

She is running against Jagdeep Dhankar, the governor of West Bengal and candidate for the National Democratic Alliance (NDA).

Who Is Margaret Alva?

Margaret Alva was born Margaret Nazareth on 14 April 1942 in a Roman Catholic family in Mangalore, Karnataka.

Margaret Alva is a well-known Indian politician, who has lately made headlines after being selected as the opposition’s nominee for the 14th vice presidential election.

She was born on April 14th, 1942 in Mangalore, Madras Presidency, British India. Her family is Roman Catholic. Her real name is Margaret Nazareth.

She graduated from Mount Carmel College in Bangalore with a BA, and the city’s government law college awarded her a law degree. She participated in various student movements while in college and was a passionate and outstanding debater.

On May 24, 1964, she married Niranjan Thomas Alva, with whom she had three boys, including Niret Alva, and one daughter. She is currently 80 years old.

Her Career

Alva juggled her engagement in humanitarian organisations with her job as an advocate, ultimately rising to the position of president of the Young Women’s Christian Association. One of her earliest participation was with the non-governmental organisation she formed called “Karuna,” which was centred on women’s and children’s concerns.

She then joined the Indian National Congress political party since Violet Alva, her mother-in-law, held the position of second deputy chairman of the Rajya Sabha in the 1960s. She rose through the party ranks quickly and served as Joint Secretary of the All India Congress Committee.

She also became a cabinet minister several times. Up to the conclusion of her term in August 2014, she held the positions of 17th Governor of Goa, 23rd Governor of Gujarat, 20th Governor of Rajasthan, and 4th Governor of Uttarakhand.
