There is a new president of the NFL Players Association. Following DeMaurice Smith’s term’s expiration in 2024, the NFLPA declared on Wednesday that it has elected Lloyd Howell to serve as its new executive director.

The NFLPA’s board of player representatives has chosen Lloyd Howell to serve as the organization’s new executive director. Howell will oversee the NFLPA with president J.C. Tretter, who was chosen in 2020 and re-elected in 2022.
An 11-person NFLPA search committee, made up of the executive officers of the union, including Tretter and vice presidents Calais Campbell, Austin Ekeler, and Richard Sherman, conducted the search, which got under way over a year ago.

Howell does not have an NFL background, similar to Smith. Prior to his retirement at the end of 2022, he worked at consulting firm Booz Allen for 34 years, most recently in the roles of chief financial officer and treasurer.
Howell served in a number of additional executive positions over his lengthy tenure at Booz Allen, including executive vice president of the client services division. He graduated from Penn and holds an MBA from Harvard. He also serves on the board of trustees of Penn.
Following former player Gene Upshaw’s 25-year tenure as NFLPA executive director, Smith, who also has a business experience, was hired, marking a significant shift. Multiple players supported Howell after his election, despite some controversy surrounding the search’s methodology.
Very honored to watch and be a part of a vote from our elected board to elect our new Executive Director Lloyd Howell. Our @NFLPA EC and President @JCTretter did an amazing job to keep it confidential, professional, find someone who will steer our great union forward! https://t.co/eoiNpPqmjE

Smith’s term ends in 2024, but according to CBS Sports’ Jonathan Jones, Howell might succeed before then.
