Before the Penn State game on Friday in Ann Arbor, the tunnel at Michigan Stadium was officially renamed and devoted to honoring former coach Lloyd Carr as per a board of regents resolution from September.

On the outside of The Big House, there are big, strong letters that read, “Lloyd Carr tunnel.” Carr saw the homage to the 1997 National Championship squad during the first quarter of the Penn State game.

Who Is Lloyd Carr?
Lloyd Carr is a well-known former American football player and coach. He has been in the news because the tunnel at Michigan Stadium was officially renamed after him recently.
His full name is Lloyd Henry Carr Jr. He was born in Tennessee’s Hawkins County on July 30, 1945. When he was ten years old, his family relocated to Riverview, Michigan.
He did his schooling at Riverview Community High School. While pursuing his M.A. in educational administration, he also participated in athletics for the University of Missouri and Northern Michigan University (NMU).
Shortly after retiring, Lloyd Carr was awarded an honorary doctorate by the University of Michigan. Additionally, he was awarded an honorary degree by Albion College in 2008.
He first married Karen. Later, in 1994, he married Laurie, his second wife. They were together until Laurie Carr died of cancer at the age of 70. He also has one child and his name is Jason Carr.
Currently, he is 77 years old. CJ Carr, a five-star quarterback in the 2024 class and the grandson of Michigan coach Lloyd Carr, has committed to Notre Dame.
His Career
From 1995 through the 2007 football season, Lloyd Carr was the University of Michigan’s head coach. The Michigan Wolverines had a 122-40 record under him, and they won or shared five Big Ten Conference championships (1997, 1998, 2000, 2003, and 2004).
According to the Associated Press, his 1997 squad won the title. He has a 20-8 coaching record while facing opponents in the top 10. He was enshrined as a coach in the College Football Hall of Fame in 2011. His net worth stands at $2 million.
