Khalid Ahmed Jamil is an Indian football manager and former professional player who was born on April 21, 1977, in Kuwait City, Kuwait. He is the Indian Super League franchise Jamshedpur FC’s head coach. The former midfielder stands 1.82 m (6 ft 0 in) tall.
A look at Khalid Jamil’s career
As a successful manager as well as a former player, Khalid Jamil is a well-known personality in Indian football. As he led East Bengal and Mohun Bagan, his outstanding tenure with Aizawl gave him access to larger platforms.
Jamil met Michel Platini, the coach of the France national football team at the time, at an under-14 camp while he was in Kuwait. When he eventually relocated to India, he was approached by East Bengal and Mohun Bagan for a contract, but he turned it down because the offers were made on behalf of an alcohol corporation.
In 1997, Jamil began playing professionally for Mahindra United of the National Football League. He did not appear in the 1997–1998 season, though, and in 1998, he departed for Air India. He barely played when he returned to Mahindra United in 2002 due to a slew of illnesses, which finally led to his early retirement. He then joined Mumbai in 2007, although he didn’t play a single game for the squad during his two years there. In 2009, Jamil declared his retirement.
Talking about his international career, in a 1998 friendly against Uzbekistan, Jamil made his debut for his country. He then participated in the 2002 World Cup qualifying matches. Between 1998 and 2001, he played in twelve games for the India national team.
Following his playing career, Jamil entered the management field, beginning in 2009 with Mumbai, his final I-League team. He has managed teams like Aizwal, East Bangal, Mohun Bagan, NorthEast United, Bengaluru United and Chitwan before becoming the head coach of Jamshedpur.
For the 2019–20 ISL season, Jamil signed on as head of academy at NorthEast United, making his ISL debut. His biggest opportunity with the team came in 2020–21 when he was appointed head coach for the remainder of the season. In that season, he won 10 straight games and led the Highlanders to the playoffs.
The 2021–22 season saw him named as their head coach, making him the first Indian to hold the position permanently for an ISL team. Additionally, under his direction, Aizawl FC won the 2016–17 I-League championship, becoming the first club from the northeast to do so.
