His comments came at a time when Kanhaiya Lal was murdered by Muslims with the action sparking no violence from Hindus opposing to the scores of acts of stone pelting and arson executed at Nupur Sharma’s comments. Who Is Surya Kant?
Former Chief Justice of the Himachal Pradesh High Court and current judge of the Supreme Court of India, Surya Kant in lately been in news for his statements on the expelled BJP leader Nupur Sharma.
He was born in 1962 to a low-income farming family in the Haryana hamlet of Petwar in the Hisar district. Presently, he is 60 years old.
In 1981, he received his graduate degree from the Government Post Graduate College in Hisar, and in 1984, Maharishi Dayanand University in Rohtak awarded him his LL.B. In 2011, he earned a first-class LL.M. degree at Kurukshetra University in Kurukshetra.
His Career
Justice Surya Kant began practising law in 1984 in the Hisar District Court in Haryana before moving to the Punjab and Haryana High Court in Chandigarh the following year. In the High Court, he defended several Universities, Boards, Corporations, Banks, and various additional Government entities.
On July 7, 2000, he was named the youngest Advocate General of Haryana, and in March 2001, he was named Senior Advocate. Up until his appointment as a permanent Judge to the Punjab and Haryana High Court on January 9, 2004, he served as Advocate General.
On February 23, 2007, he was also proposed for nomination as a member of the National Legal Services Authority for two successive terms. Several famous conferences were organized and attended by Justice Surya Kant.
He took his oath to serve as the Chief Justice of the Himachal Pradesh High Court on October 5, 2018. His appointment to the Supreme Court of India was proposed on May 9 by the Supreme Court standing committee, which is led by Chief Justice of India Ranjan Gogoi.
Justice Surya Kant took his oath as a judge of the Supreme Court of India on May 24, 2019. If the seniority rule is implemented, he will succeed the current Chief Justice as the 52nd Chief Justice of India.
He is scheduled to retire on February 9th, 2027. The details of his family are unknown.
