Justice Prasanna B. Varale has been proposed for this position. The appointment of another judge to the Supreme Court is imminent.

After the retirement of Senior Judge Justice Sanjay Kishan Kaul, the number of judges in the Supreme Court decreased to 34. Following this, a collegium consisting of CJI D.Y. Chandrachud, Justice Sanjiv Khanna, Justice B.R. Gavai, Justice Suryakant, and Justice Aniruddha Bose has recommended the appointment of a new judge to the central government.
In this recommendation, Justice Prasanna B. Varale from the Karnataka High Court has been named. The Supreme Court’s number of judges decreased to 34 after the retirement of Senior Judge Justice Sanjay Kishan Kaul.

The collegium, consisting of CJI D.Y. Chandrachud and other justices, has recommended Justice Prasanna B. Varale from the Karnataka High Court for the appointment of a new judge. If the central government accepts this recommendation, the number of Dalit judges in the Supreme Court will increase to three for the first time in history.
Who’s Justice Prasanna B. Varale?
Justice Prasanna B. Varale pursued his education at Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar Marathwada University in Aurangabad, Maharashtra. Currently, at the age of 61, Justice Prasanna B. Varale serves as the Chief Justice of the Karnataka High Court and is a Dalit Hindu.

Before becoming a judge, he practiced as a lawyer for 20 years, specializing in criminal, labor, and administrative cases. Currently, Justice Prasanna B. Varale is the most senior judge in the Karnataka High Court.
After serving as a lawyer for 20 years, Justice Prasanna B. Varale became a judge on July 18, 2008, in the Bombay High Court. On October 15, 2022, he took oath as the Chief Justice of the Karnataka High Court. Now, his nomination for the Supreme Court has been recommended.
Justice S.K. Kaul retired last year on December 25. He served as a Supreme Court judge for more than six years and ten months. Now, Justice Prasanna B. Varale is set to be appointed in his place.
Currently, there are two judges from Dalit communities in the Supreme Court, B.R. Gavai and C.T. Ravi Kumar. If Justice Prasanna B. Varale’s appointment is confirmed, there will be three judges from Dalit communities in the Supreme Court.
