With season 13 of ITV’s detective drama Vera finally concluding, the producers decided to honor recently deceased production head Julie Burnell. Just before the credits began to roll following the end of the last episode, the show featured a title card with the words, “In Memory of Julie Burnell, 1957–2023.” They did this to acknowledge Julie’s role in shaping narratives and ensuring the success of the shows she worked on.

Julie started out her role with the popular show Vera as the production executive during the first season. She eventually worked on the show for several more seasons while working on other ITV dramas like Lewis, Mr. Selfridge, and Poirot. Aside from that, she has also worked on notable shows like Four Lives, Shetland, and Marple.

Vera Episode 3 season 13
The last episode of Vera season 13 paid tribute to Julie Burnell’s legacy, besides diving into a complex murder mystery. The central plotline of the episode involved the murder of a chip shop owner, which unfolded into a web of secrets, lies, and familial discord, which were all signature features of Vera’s storytelling.
The episode featured DCI Vera Stanhope (Brenda Blethyn) alongside her team, led by DI Joe Ashworth (David Leon), as they uncover an intricate narrative of debts and broken promises. Along with the central plot, the episode also featured an unexpected emotional turn as it also addressed personal loss. The episode placed Joe Ashworth in a situation where he dealt with having to admit his father to hospice.
