Who is Xuanyi Yu?
Yu, who earned a master’s degree in computer science from UC San Diego, had a stint at Amazon before joining Google in 2021. Chen, as indicated on his LinkedIn profile, also completed a master’s degree in computer science from UC San Diego and served as a Google software engineer, specifically contributing to YouTube shorts recommendations.

How the authorities arrested Liren Chen?
In a press release detailing the incident, the Santa Clara District Attorney’s office stated that officers responded to a well-being check at the Valley Way residence on Tuesday morning. Concerned about unsuccessful attempts to contact Chen, an acquaintance of the couple dialed 911. The acquaintance provided details to the officers, describing Chen being inside the house, sitting motionless with hands raised.
Upon entering, the police discovered Chen and took him into custody. Authorities revealed that the suspect displayed a severely swollen and purple right hand. The press release additionally conveyed that officers found Xuanyi Yu deceased on the bedroom floor, directly behind where Chen had been standing, with significant blunt force injuries to her head.
