According to reports, the documentary series would trace the rise and fall of News UK reporter Mazher Mahmood, who rose to fame after conducting several sting operations on prominent figures in the UK.
In 2016, after he was charged with tampering with justice, the journalist Mazher Mahmood’s case—also known as “the Fake Sheikh”—came to light. The three-episode Amazon Prime Video Original documentary series is slated for release on Tuesday, September 26, 2023.

Mazher Mahmood is a notorious British journalist. He has been in the news because the upcoming documentary series “Fake Sheikh” is set to feature his story.
He was born on 22 March 1963 in Small Heath, Birmingham, United Kingdom. He has Pakistani heritage. His father’s name is Sultan Mahmood, and his mother’s name is Shamim Mahmood. He also has a brother.
Presently, Mazher Mahmood is 60 years old.
His career
At the age of 18, Mazher Mahmood denounced the sale of pirated DVDs and named family members who were involved. This led to his first job as a journalist. He was employed by the News of the World for two weeks before starting a freelancing job with the Sunday People.
Mahmood claims that he first used the ‘Sheikh’ identity in 1984, when he and writer Roger Insall brought prostitutes to a hotel room to investigate a vice ring at the Metropole Hotel at the National Exhibition Centre, Birmingham.
Later, Mazher Mahmood joined News of the World in 1991 and developed into a specialist, conducting sting operations to find and reveal celebrity frauds and wrongdoings.
Over the course of his career, Mahmood conducted sting operations against a number of figures, including Sophie, Countess of Wessex, Tim Yeo, the former Environment Minister, and David Mellor, the former Secretary of State for National Heritage. He revealed some contentious news, including terrorism stings, sports betting, and even narcotics busts.
Nevertheless, his techniques have also come under fire for being unconventional and even unlawful. Mazher Mahmood’s downfall came after he was found guilty of tampering with evidence in the infamous drug trial of singer Tulisa Contostavlos.
He, along with many others, was accused of plotting to disrupt the administration of justice. During the 2014 drug conviction of Tulisa Contostavlos, a singer and former judge of the British version of the X Factor TV talent show, Mahmood was accused of tampering with a police statement.
On October 21, 2016, Mahmoud and Smith were given 12-month and 15-month suspended sentences.
