According to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski, Jordi Fernandez, the Sacramento Kings’ assistant coach, has been chosen by the Brooklyn Nets to take over as head coach.

Fernandez succeeded Kevin Ollie, Brooklyn’s interim coach, after head coach Jacque Vaughn was fired in February.

Who is Jordi Fernandez?

Jordi Fernandez is a Spanish basketball coach who is currently the assistant coach for National Basketball Association (NBA) team Sacramento Kings. He also serves as the head coach of Canadian men’s national team.

The 41-year-old was born on December 27, 1982 in Badalona, Spain. He has a PhD in sports psychology and has completed one academic article. He studied sports sciences for his undergraduate degree.

A look at Jordi Fernandez’s career so far

Jordi Fernandez has been into coaching since a very young age. Considered one of the league’s most promising young coaches, he has a long history of success.  He got into it when he was just 15 worked at teams such as CB Sant Josep de Badalona and CB Sant Boi’s youth setup in his native country. He was also employed at Club Basquet l’Hospitalet as the athletic trainer for the LEB Plata team.

He took a few months off from teaching, coaching in Norway and the Netherlands, and visiting the summer camp of the University of Oklahoma. In 2006, Fernandez moved to Las Vegas, Nevada, and joined the coaching staff of the Impact Basketball Academy before he kicked off his NBA training in 2009.

He was employed by Cleveland Cavaliers as their developer coach. Since then, he has coached teams like (2013) Spain U19 (assistant), (2013-2014) Canton Charge (assistant), (2014-2016) Canton Charge, (2016-2022) Denver Nuggets (assistant), (2022-present) Sacramento Kings (associate HC), (2023-present) Canada

After serving as Denver Nuggets associate head coach for six years under Michael Malone, Fernandez joined Mike Brown’s staff prior to the 2022–2023 season. Fernandez led the team’s smooth transition as a leader.

He is also head coach of the Canadian national team, which placed third at the 2023 FIBA World Cup and won the bronze medal.
