Interestingly, the disaster comes just weeks after Lynch got acquitted of fraud charges in the U.S., where Bloomer also played a small role during the trial.

Jonathan Bloomer missing and presumed dead

The tragic accident took place on Monday, off the coast of Sicily, after a devastating tornado struck the luxury yacht. The group were aboard the yacht celebrating a fruitful end to a decades-long trial, that involved Bloomer and Lynch. However, the group soon went missing after high winds and a vortex of water struck their yacht and capsized it.

According to reports, the yacht was carrying 22 passengers, out of which rescue officials managed to recover 15. Meanwhile, one of the passengers was declared dead, while the rest are missing and also presumed dead. Lynch’s wife, Angela Bacares, is the owner of the yacht, and managed to survive, while Bloomer’s wife is also missing.

The tragic accident involving Jonathan Bloomer and Lynch Mike notably has odd timing as it coincided with another accident. Just the week before, on Saturday, Lynch’s co-defendant Stephen Chamberlain, died after a car hit him in Cambridgeshire, England.

Mike Lynch acquitted

Lynch, who founded a software company called Autonomy in 1996, sold it to Hewlett-Packard in 2011, for $11 billion. Notably, HP had to pay a 60% premium over the company’s stock price. However, just one year following the deal, HP reported an $8.8 billion write-down. They accused Lynch of attributing inflated revenue data from Autonomy worth over $5 billion.


As a result, Lynch received 16 counts of conspiracy and fraud, but was eventually acquitted in June earlier this year. Jonathan Bloomer, was also one of the people that testified during Lynch’s trial, after having served on Autonomy’s audit committee. He was a non-executive board member of the company in 2010. In his testimony, he sided with Lynch and assured that he was focused on helping the company grow rather than looking at the company’s financial side.

Jonathan Bloomer is the chairman of Morgan Stanley, who was born on March 23, 1954, in the UK and is a Jew by religion. Morgan Stanley is an American company that deals in multinational investment bank and financial services. Jonathan, who is currently 70 years old, recently went missing and presumed death following a yacht accident involving several people.

Jonathan Bloomer obtained his education from the Imperial College in London. He graduated with a BSc degree in Physics in 1974.

Jonathan Bloomer is currently married to his wife, Judy, who served as a former director of property developer, Change Real Estate. She has also served as a trustee at the Eve Appeal for over 20 years, which is a gynecological cancer research charity. Jonathan and Judy have three children together.

Bloomer’s career

After completing his education, Bloomer joined Arthur Andersen during the 70s, and started building his portfolio. He mainly worked in insurance, both in the UK and across Europe. Bloomer eventually joined the firms European Insurance Practice as a Senior Partner. After an impressive career at Arthur Andersen, Bloomer joined Prudential Public Limited Company, as Group Finance Director in 1995. He eventually became the deputy Group Chief Executive in 1999 before getting ousted in 2005.

Jonathan Bloomer then joined Cerebrus European Capital Advisors as a Partner the following year, in 2006. He also served as CEO of Lucida PLC, and Chairman for Arrow Global Group, DWF, as well as SDL Group Holdings Ltd. He finally took up his current role as Chairman of Morgan Stanley International Bank in London, in November 2016.

Jonathan also serves as Chairman of Bermuda-based re/insurer group Hiscox since 2023, according to his LinkedIn profile. Following the recent accident, Colin Keogh who is the senior independent director at Hiscox will serve as interim chair.
