Jon Wertheim taken off air for passing comment about Barbora Krejcikova

Wertheim recently got taken off air for passing a comment about Barbora Krejcikova during a tennis match. The incident happened this week, during Barbora’s WTA Finals match in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, against China’s Zheng Qinwen. Barbora lost out in the semi-finals match on Friday. Jon Wertheim, who was air on the US TV network Tennis Channel stated unaware:

Who do you think I am, Barbora Krejcikova? Look at the forehead when Krejcikova and Zheng take the court.”

The clip of the incident has since circulated across social media with the 28-year-old Czech tennis star calling him out. Krejcikova, who won the women’s singles final at Wimbledon in earlier this year in July, and the French Open in 2021 wrote on X:

You might have heard about the recent comments made on Tennis Channel during the WTA Finals coverage that focused on my appearance rather than my performance. As an athlete who has dedicated herself to this sport, it was disappointing to see this type of unprofessional commentary. This isn’t the first time something like this is happening in sports world.

She added:

“Following the incident, Tennis Channel has taken Wertheim off the air “indefinitely”.  Jon Wertheim also posted an apology on X acknowledging his “deeply regrettable comments off-air” that “inadvertently… made it to live air”.
