Why Jocelynn Rojo committed suicide?

In a tragic incident from Gainesville, Texas, 11-year-old Jocelynn Rojo Carranza lost her life after enduring months of relentless bullying from her sixth-grade classmates over her family’s immigration status. Some of her peers reportedly went so far as to threaten her with calls to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), claiming they would have her family deported.

Jocelynn’s single mother, Marbella Carranza, received a devastating call on February 3 informing her that her daughter had attempted suicide at their home. Despite being rushed to a critical care unit in Dallas, Jocelynn succumbed to her injuries on February 8. Marbella, speaking to Univision, shared her heartbreak, saying, “I waited a whole week for a miracle that my daughter would recover, but unfortunately, nothing could be done.” Marbella didn’t discuss the family’s immigration status though.

Eleven-year-old Jocelynn Rojo Carranza died five days after her mother found her unresponsive at their home in Gainesville, Texas, according to an online obituary with her undergoing treatment in a Dallas hospital.

Friends and family members, including many children, packed St. Mary Catholic Church on Wednesday to attend Jocelynn’s funeral and in the same church where Jocelynn was baptized 11 years ago, her casket laid draped in a white cloth with a crucifix on top.

Jocelynn is remembered as “a wonderful daughter, sister, niece and friend to everyone,” in the online obituary and she played the French horn, made TikTok videos, swam, did cartwheels and spent Friday nights watching movies with her family.

Reports indicate that Jocelynn had been seeking support from a school counselor due to an increase in bullying incidents. However, the Gainesville Intermediate School allegedly failed to inform her family about the severity of the harassment. Marbella is now working with investigators and the school to uncover why the family was left in the dark about the bullying her daughter faced.

The timing of Jocelynn’s death has drawn attention to the Trump administration’s intensified efforts to deport undocumented immigrants, with images of migrants being shackled and deported sparking widespread outrage. Netizens reacted to Jocelynn’s story with calls to “stop dehumanizing immigrants” and demanded justice for the young girl, urging accountability for those responsible for her suffering.
