Bryan Kohberger, a 28-year-old PHD student in criminology, will relinquish his extradition rights at his court appearance Tuesday, according to lawyer Jason LaBar
Kohberger, a recent Washington State University graduate, was arrested on Friday, December 30, for his alleged involvement in the brutal stabbing deaths of four University of Idaho students: Kaylee Goncalves, 21, Madison Mogen, 21, Ethan Chapin, 20, and Xana Kernodle, 20. Kohberger’s attorney has since issued a statement about his client’s immediate future.

At his upcoming court hearing, Kohberger’s attorney, chief public defender Jason LaBar, will relinquish his client’s extradition rights because Kohberger is “eager to be exonerated of all charges” LaBar said. A judge’s presence is required for the waiver. Kohberger, who is 28 years old, is pursuing a Ph.D. in criminology at the moment. In Chestnuthill Township, where Kohberger currently lives with his family, he was apprehended.
According to the Idaho Statesman, Jason LaBar said, “Mr. Kohberger has been charged of very serious offences, but the American legal system cloaks him in a cloud of innocence.”
Jason LaBar says Bryan does not have enough funding to support his case
A public defender will be sought out by the accused, as LaBar has noted. Because the accused “does not have the funding for a private attorney” Jason LaBar has contacted the Idaho Public Defense Commission in an effort to secure legal representation for his client without delay. He added that he had met with the accused and his parents. Explained that it would be impossible to afford a private attorney given the high likelihood that Idaho prosecutors will seek the death sentence.
Law enforcement has been tight-lipped about the inquiry, but Latah County prosecutor Bill Thompson has said that the affidavits supporting Bryan’s criminal accusations would be kept secret until he is extradited to Idaho and served with the state arrest warrant.
Thompson said, “There’s a pending case now in court, and I and my office and the investigators have to live with the restrictions that our Supreme Court places on pretrial publicity.”
