Akari Fujinami is a Japanese freestyle wrestler who was born on November 11, 2003, in Yokkaichi, Mie, Japan. She is currently just 20-years-old, and recently won gold in the women’s 53 kg at the Paris 2024 Summer Olympics. She has an older named Yuhi Fujinami, who is the 2017 World Wrestling Championships bronze medallist. Notably, Akari trains under her coach and father Toshikazu.

Career and achievements

Akari Fujinami has dominated the wrestling scene in the women’s freestyle 53 kg ever since she started competing. Ever since her loss at the National Junior High School Wrestling Championships in 2017 she has gone unbeaten, winning 137 straight national and international bouts. Fujinami won her first major gold medal in the women’s 53 kg event at the Oslo 2021 World Wrestling Championships.

She also went on to win the gold medal in her event at the Ulaanbaatar 2022 Asian Wrestling Championships. Akari also won another gold at the 2022 Ulaanbaatar Asian Championships. 2023 was a successful year for her as she won gold medals in four different events including a gold in the women’s 55 kg event at the 2023 Dan Kolov & Nikola Petrov Tournament and 3 other golds in the 53 kg event at the Belgrade World Championships, Astana Asian Championships, and Zagreb Grand Prix. Most recently, she won the gold medal the Paris 2024 Summer Olympic Games in the 53 kg event.
